East Marion United Methodist Church, 210 Baldwin Ave. in Marion, will host a bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will have a white elephant room, a bake sale, crafts, lots of homemade jellies, hot dogs, dessert and drinks. A queen-size homemade quilt will be sold as well.
Historic Carson House will host a Christmas market on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be baked goods, vintage items, Christmas gifts, crafts, holiday décor and much more.

The county Veterans Day program will take place at the Senior Center in Marion on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. It is presented by American Legion Post 56 of Marion. Veterans and families will be recognized, service flags will be presented. Special music will be presented by the Foothills Community Band and the county veterans officer, David Byrd, will provide a short presentation explaining services available as well as recent upgrades to the system. The DAR will participate also. With weather uncertainties the program will all be inside. As a courtesy, please save spots closer in parking for challenged and older guests.
The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League in Old Fort will offer a class in Beginner’s Pet Portraits with Lisa Hines. It will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $40 for A3L members, $50 for nonmembers, plus a $25 supply fee. No experience necessary for this class. You send a picture of the pet you want to paint to Hines at [email protected] and she sketches the pet onto an 11-inch by 14-inch canvas with each section marked with the color you will use. It’s as simple as paint by numbers when you were a kid and Lisa will help guide you along the way with brush stroke examples and blending techniques. The class will taught Saturday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $40 for A3L members, $50 for nonmembers, plus an $8 supply fee. Come make cute, customized ornaments that can become long-lasting heirlooms out of clay. Students will have fun with different-shaped choices, from hearts and stars to animals and more. NAACP McDowell County will meet on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. at Addie’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Marion.
The Newcomers and Friends in McDowell County will host it’s monthly membership meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. The luncheon meeting will be held at the Marion Community Building, 191 N. Main St. in downtown Marion. This month’s lunch will be catered by Burrito Brothers. Lunch cost is $15 per person. The guest speaker will be Kim Moran speaking on the Ghosts of McDowell County. Founded as a way for those new to the area to meet others, form lasting friendships and become part of the community, membership is open to all women in McDowell County and surrounding areas. U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards’ mobile office, the Carolina Cruiser, will be at the McDowell Chamber of Commerce building, located at 1170 W. Tate St., Marion on Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Edwards’ staff will be parked outside with the Carolina Cruiser ready to meet with constituents and assist with casework.
There will be a livestock judging interest meeting Thursday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. at N.C. Cooperative Extension Office, 60 E. Court St., Marion (on the second floor). You can enter through the employee-only entrance on Garden Street. The Livestock Judging meeting is open to youth the ages of 8-18 as of Jan. 1, 2023. This meeting will cover topics such as the basics of livestock judging, how to evaluate animals and how to successfully give a set of oral reasons. For more information, call 652-8104.

The class will be taught Friday, Nov. 17, from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $60 for A3L members, $70 for nonmembers, which includes all supplies. The class will be taught Saturday, Nov. 18, from noon to 5 p.m. The cost is $35 for A3L members, $45 for nonmembers, plus a $14 supply fee. Learn to build a mosaic stained glass tree over a form. Mosaic tree sits on wood base which holds a votive candle that can also be used with battery operated fairy lights. You choose the colors, clean, foil, flux and tin each piece and tack together to design your own unique centerpiece.
