Lutheran church in Reiffton dedicates new solar panels
Members of the Reformation Lutheran Church in Reiffton gathered this past weekend to dedicate a bank of solar panels that the church says serve as a symbol of its dedication to stewardship of the environment.
Led by Pastor Paul Metzloff, the congregation gathered Sunday between services for a blessing of the 69 solar panels.
The congregation also thanked the Berks County Community Foundation and the Met-Ed/Penelec Sustainable Energy Fund for providing grants for the system. The congregation raised $25,000 of the $75,000 total costs of the solar project, with the balance being paid by the grants.
The system, which was installed by local solar company GeoEnergy, has already generated more than 3 megawatt hours of electricity since it went online in early September. Church officials say the system will help the environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions as well as providing significant utility cost savings to the congregation.
